Renowned geologist Dr. Ritesh Arya has made a groundbreaking discovery during his groundwater exploration expedition in Burtse, Ladakh. This discovery promises to illuminate the geological history of the region and offer invaluable insights into the ancient paleoenvironment. 

 

Discovering Marine Fossils at Extreme Altitudes:

At an astonishing altitude of 16,000 feet above sea level, Dr. Arya unearthed marine fossils, including gastropods, bivalves, and foraminifera. These remarkable findings underscore the powerful tectonic forces that shaped the Himalayas when they emerged from the Tethys Sea approximately 40 million years ago. These fossils bear a striking resemblance to Turritellatids (gastropods) and Assilina (foraminifera) found in the Subathu Formation of Himachal Pradesh, dating back to the Eocene epoch, roughly 56 to 33.9 million years ago.
