A captivating menagerie unfolded across diverse categories. The spotlight gleamed on the animal kingdom with the emergence of three fresh mammal species and one uncharted record. Avian enthusiasts rejoiced with the notation of two previously unrecorded bird species. The reptile realm unveiled 30 novel species and two distinct records, while amphibians unveiled six species and a single new record. Fish, aquatic marvels, also made waves with 29 brand-new species and an impressive eight records.
Of these astonishing discoveries, invertebrates took center stage, boasting an astounding 583 species, while vertebrates held their own with 81 representatives.
The enchanting realm of insects reigned supreme among invertebrates, while fish stood tall among the vertebrate group.
Kerala illuminated the map of discovery with its contributions encompassing a remarkable 14.6%, closely followed by Karnataka at 13.2% and Tamil Nadu at 12.6%. The expedition of knowledge extended to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh, each etching their remarkable contributions.
In the mammalian tapestry, the stage belonged to the intriguing Miniopterus phillipsi and Glischropus meghalayanus—both bat species—unveiled in the heart of Meghalaya. Not to be outshone, the Sela macaque (Macaca selai), a newfound macaque species, emerged from the lush landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh.
Noteworthy records further ignited curiosity. The sighting of Macaca leucogenys, the white-cheeked macaque, in West Siang, Arunachal Pradesh, previously exclusive to southeastern Tibet, stirred excitement. The yellow-rumped flycatcher (Ficedula zanthopygia) enchanted observers as it gracefully appeared on Narcondam Island of the Andaman archipelago, expanding its range.
Not confined to fauna, India's flora equally dazzled. The nation added 339 plant taxa to its floral repository, embracing 186 previously unseen taxa and 153 new distributional records. An enchanting panorama emerged, encompassing seed plants, fungi, lichens, algae, bryophytes, microbes, and pteridophytes.
